Project Description:

Project description:

"My Language Software" (MLS) is a language learning program I will use to conduct a doctoral research experiment. In this experiment, a number of tested students will use MLS to taking part in a number of written text based dialogs during simulated situations. Students will be divided into 8 groups, depending on their type of interaction with the software and the feedback received in response to their grammatical mistakes. According to the type of interaction with MLS, 2 main groups of students will be distinguished, i.e., ACTIVE vs. PASSIVE students.

ACTIVE STUDENTS will have a dialog with an Avatar, i.e., a human actor that I have pre-filmed playing the role of e.g., a real state agent. Each dialog is structured in items, each item consisting of a question posed by the Avatar and the student's response. Students' responses will be controlled, i.e., restricted to selecting options, filling-in blanks, or translating sentences. After typing each response, students will read them aloud and an audio file will be generated and stored. At the end of each item, the Avatars will act as language teachers, assessing the grammatical accuracy of the student's response and providing corrective feedback in 1 of 4 different ways. This will be done by simply playing 1 of 4 types of videos that I have filmed. Grammatical accuracy will be assessed by matching students' responses against a database of correct answers. No natural language processing will be required. The answers typed in by the students and the specific Avatar feedback video that got played in response will be stored in a database.

As opposed to active students, an equal number of PASSIVE STUDENTS will act as mere observers of the dialogs between the Avatars and the active students. That means that for every active student in the experiment, a video must be compiled using their typed-in responses, the audio files of the students reading their responses, and the Avatar feedback videos that got played. This video must be generated dynamically, it cannot be a video-recording of a session. After each item, passive students will be asked a comprehension question to ensure that they are paying attention to the conversation. To determine the level of comprehension of the passive students, their answers will also be stored in a database and matched against those of the active students.

??y language software??will be implemented in a language lab with ca. 30 computers. This involves randomly assigning students to 1 of 4 active groups as per the type of feedback that they will receive after each typed response. After each active student has completed a session, the next student sitting at the same computer will act as a passive student. All students will have to complete a number of assessment tests. All asnwers must be stored in a central database. To accelerate and facilitate programming, I will provide visuals of the screens of all the tests and items in the dialogs, as well as samples the videos that will be inserted, as requested by the programmer. I have limited programming experience and will be happy to work in tandem with the programmer by entering information into the templates that s/he gives me, thus reducing tedious work on his/her side while accelerating the production process and making sure that the software is what I need, minimizing any potential final changes.
